Bifold doors in Lewes
Discuss your Lewes bifold door project.
We supply and install bifold doors in Lewes, from replacement garden doors to full-width openings on new extensions. The right choice depends a lot on the type of house, so this page looks at the homes we see most often in Lewes and the doors that tend to suit them.
Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, built on a hill above the River Ouse and surrounded by the South Downs National Park. It is known for its Norman castle, the 1264 Battle of Lewes, Harveys Brewery and the steep medieval lanes locally called twittens. The town is also famous for its mathematical tiles, used in the Georgian period to give older timber-framed houses a fashionable brick-fronted look.
Flint, brick, tile-hanging and mathematical tiles around the High Street, Southover and the castle. Most changes at the rear still need careful design.
Often suits: Slim heritage-style or timber bifold doors on rear or garden elevations
Streets of bay-fronted terraces and larger villas on the slopes around the town. Kitchen and side-return extensions are the usual reason for a new garden opening.
Often suits: 3 or 4-panel heritage or aluminium bifold doors in a dark finish
Post-war and more recent houses on the edges of the town, where a wider rear opening onto the garden is easier to create.
Often suits: Contemporary aluminium bifold doors with a low threshold

Because Lewes lies inside the South Downs National Park, planning applications in the town are the responsibility of the South Downs National Park Authority (many are processed by Lewes District Council on its behalf). Much of central Lewes is a conservation area and a high proportion of its buildings are listed, so check whether listed building consent or planning permission is needed before you order doors.
Separately from planning, replacing an external door that is more than half glazed is controlled work under the Building Regulations. The installer should be registered with a competent person scheme such as FENSA, which certifies the work and notifies your council, or the installation needs approval from building control. New openings and extensions need building control sign-off in their own right. You can check whether any installer is registered on the FENSA website.

Often yes, but only with listed building consent, which in Lewes comes from the South Downs National Park Authority. Rear and garden elevations are usually the most realistic place for a new opening, and timber or slim heritage-style frames are more likely to be accepted than wide modern aluminium. Get consent before ordering, as made-to-measure doors cannot be returned.
It can. Parts of Lewes near the River Ouse flooded badly in October 2000. A completely flush threshold looks best, but in low-lying streets a slightly raised threshold with good drainage in front of the doors is the safer choice. It is worth checking the flood map for your address on the Environment Agency's website first.
