Hove sits immediately west of Brighton and now forms part of the city of Brighton and Hove. It is known for the Regency architecture of Brunswick Town, Adelaide Crescent and Palmeira Square, and for the broad avenues of late-Victorian villas running down to the seafront.

Planning is handled by Brighton and Hove City Council, and much of central Hove is covered by conservation areas. If your home is a flat, you will usually need planning permission and the freeholder's consent before changing an external opening. Near the seafront, choose doors with strong weather ratings and coastal-grade finishes.
Separately from planning, replacing an external door that is more than half glazed is controlled work under the Building Regulations. The installer should be registered with a competent person scheme such as FENSA, which certifies the work and notifies your council, or the installation needs approval from building control. New openings and extensions need building control sign-off in their own right. You can check whether any installer is registered on the FENSA website.

Much of central Hove is in a conservation area, and several areas have Article 4 directions that remove permitted development rights. Listed Regency buildings need listed building consent. Brighton and Hove City Council can confirm what applies to your address.
Wind-blown sand and salt build up in the bottom track and hinges. Vacuum the track, wipe the frames with fresh water and check the drainage slots every few months, especially after winter storms.
